Thus Ardito was born. It ripened three weeks earlier than other wheats. Strampelli created it by crossing a Japanese variety Akagomuchi, characterized by early ripening but no other value, with the hybrid obtained by crossing Rieti with Wilhelmina, a high yielding but late ripening variety.

The Ardito was a real success because it ripened early, avoiding the summer drought and giving farmers time to sow rice, tobacco, flax etc. as a catch crop, assuring higher profits. (Roberto Lorenzetti, Wheat Science the green revolution of Nazareno Strampelli, 2000, Rome)
