Wheat interspecifique / intergeneric crosses

Interspecific and intergeneric wheat crosses are an important tool for broadening the genetic diversity available to wheat breeding. Interspecific crosses involve different species within the genus Triticum, while intergeneric crosses combine wheat with related genera such as Aegilops. These crosses make it possible to introduce useful traits from wild or related species, such as disease resistance, stress tolerance or improved adaptation, into cultivated wheat. They can also be used to develop new genetic combinations and pre-breeding material for future breeding programmes.
